Tomorrow is the winter solstice, where the balance of light and darkness shifts back again toward the light. Unlike most people, I’ve enjoyed this period of early darkness and long nights. In the past few weeks, a very old fashioned phrase describing them has stayed in my head: “In the gloaming.”
Gloaming refers to the time after sunset but before darkness. Neither light nor dark, but a mysterious and fluid time that belongs to no one. To me, this is a time of existing in between worlds, in a liminal state. And because it is not one thing or another, there is an exquisite freedom to it, as well as a sense of possibility.
In the gloaming, the world gets softer. Edges blur. The line between dream and reality dissolve. It is a perfect time to meditate, sit quietly, write, pray or nap — however you transport yourself between worlds — because you are not pushing against the hard edges of life. The gloaming, instead, creates an opening for you to slip through this natural portal into mystery, almost effortlessly, if you approach it with intention. Take it. It is nature’s gift to you at this time of year.
